Today’s post is pretty straight forward; we’ll be taking a look at the pros and cons of both single action and double action OTFs. You might think you already know which of the two you prefer, but you might surprise yourself and find out some new things about these OTFs.

Single Action Double Action
Pros
  • Simpler and therefore more reliable
  • Less likely to fire without lockup
  • Can  have very tight lockup and little/no blade play
  • Quicker blade deployment
  • Generally speaking, single action OTFs are less expensive than double action, of course this will vary depending on the manufacturer and materials used
  • More convenient
  • More fun to use
  • More ideal for an EDC
Cons
  • Not ideal for an EDC
  • Less convenient
  • More likely to malfunction/jam
  • More blade play, BUT the blade play is needed for the blade to deploy properly
  • More likely to fire without lockup
  • Blade deployment is slower than single action OTFs
  • More expensive

As you can see, there are many things to consider when purchasing an OTF. I wouldn’t say that single action is going to be better than double action 100 percent of the time or vice versa; it really depends on what your needs are. In my opinion, a double action is going to be preferable if you want something that’s convenient and can be used daily. A single action would be better if you want something that’s going to be long lasting and low maintenance.

Do you prefer single or double action OTFs?
